Unity
Unity
uni·ty | \ ˈyü-nə-tē \
Over the past couple of months the word UNITY has been repeating in my heart and mind. I’ve been pondering what it truly looks like today in our communities, families, friends, work places and yes, here on social media?
The Webster’s dictionary defines unity as:
:the quality or state of NOT being multiple, “ONENESS”; continuity without deviation or change (as in purpose or action) and the quality or state of being made one : UNIFICATION.
Last week as I was chatting with Luke, these words poured out of me… “we are in a time of war and in a time of war, we don’t act or speak like we do when we are in a time of peace.” The words took me by surprise in all honesty… war? We aren’t in a physical war? But the truth of the matter is, we have been and are now in a time of war, it just looks different. The past year and a half have been a war physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.
In times of war there are many ways to respond and act and as 9/11 sent shock waves across the country, unity looked different. People lay down their opinions and beliefs for one purpose, to come together. We witnessed and experienced a coming together of unity we hadn’t seen in a very long time.
I believe unity in a time of war looks and feels like a verb, because it’s active, it moves and speaks. It is when people link arms with each other, they lay down their lives for each other, they roar next to each other and over one another and stand stronger together.
This is what I believe our nation and world need right now. To speak, walk and link arms in oneness and unification.
What do you want to see your home, community, country and the world around us look like? I know this is difficult and multi-layered for all of us and it will probably take a long time to truly resolve. That is exactly why we should, because what we are allowing now, the decisions we are making now are not only affecting us, but will tremendously affect the generations to come.
So in a time of war, what does unity look like? What decisions are we making now that will impact our nations freedom and the generations to come?
