Today…We Scheduled Family Time

Who doesn’t love a good plan, am I right? I have to confess that I love a good schedule and being married to someone who thrives on spontaneity we have learned to find a rhythm in family “planning”, add in a fire fighter schedule and it is a blast. I am sure you can hear the sarcasm in my voice. All jokes aside, over the course of our marriage we have found that being intentional about scheduling date nights, days of rest and family adventures has been incredibly beneficial for us and the kids. Living in Southern California comes with everything that people imagine it to be, it is busy and the choice lies in our hands to slow down and prioritize family time.

Over the years, Luke and I, have found that prioritizing and often scheduling family time is a game changer for all of us. As Luke’s job takes him away from the family for days at a time and those family days have really made a difference for everyone.

One of the ways we do this as often as the fire fighter schedule allows is sitting around the dinner table and sharing our “high, low, buffalo”. If you are not familiar with “high, low, buffalo” it is a really simple and fun way to have everyone engage around the dinner table about their day sharing your “highlight” from the day, your “low” from the day(if you have one) and your “buffalo” which is something you are looking forward too. I am sure there are many different forms of this, but this seems to be the one that has stuck to our family during this season.

We love and value our times around the dinner table, but we also love our intentional adventures out. So back to the main point, we schedule them as often as we are able, beach days, boat days, biking, walking, even some theme park action. Time flies by whether we are having fun or not and these family days have created space for us to have fun together, relax together and laugh together.

How do you have fun as a family?
